Reality is, for most people, foremost connected to things we can see and then things we can experience. Things we hear or feel are considerably less tangible, and we are not as conscious about them.

Margarethe’s work tries to connect with the space, the things, behind and in between. It is about the things that are not visible. The invisible might be about scientifically proven forces of nature like the astronomical forces behind the tides. They might be emotions about a place or the way a person connects to nature. Or they might be considered purely spiritual in nature, as angels.

Exploring this space that cannot be seen, processes and structures that are the basis and the causes of all things visible.

How does one know about anything?

Different kinds of knowing are attained by different inquiries. The intellectual approach of human science and different kinds of experiential approaches like spiritual practice or artistic work.

How is knowing experienced? What kind of knowing is acquired by pure experiential information, through the senses? And how does the sense of knowing develop through combining experiential and intellectual approaches? These are questions at the heart of Margarethe’s artistic practice.

Margarethe feels compelled to explore different kinds of research and knowing. She has a background in medicine and is thus also trained in the approach of nature science. Complementing this with the search into what can be perceived by feeling, hearing and other senses, she believes, provides a more whole picture of reality. For her these approaches are equally important in realizing the true nature of things. They are giving a more concise picture rooted equally in the sciences and the depths of human experience.

Margarethe’s artistic process goes through familiarizing herself with the science of things, observing, contemplating connecting-with. She uses materials suggested by the topic explored. These range over colour, clay, wood, metal, natural materials, wax and fabrics to sound.  They are used and formed in installation, painting/drawing, photography and sculpture.

A personal synthesis is offered to the spectators to explore themselves. They are provided with the possibility of resonating with the artwork on different levels (intellectual/thinking, sensing, feeling, etc.). The work can be viewed in various ways depending on the spectator’s individual approach.

At this time Margarethe’s focus is on natural processes. In 2017 she began the ongoing work on and with the Wadden Sea. It is known for its natural beauty, its expression of massive forces of nature and as an essential biotope amongst others in relation to bird migration. Out of this the multimedia installation Tides developed 2018. Going further the exploration of bird migration will lead to other works and coalesce into another bigger work of multimedia art.
